Rosacea is a condition that affects the skin on the face. It often begins as redness that looks like a blush across the nose, cheeks, chin, or forehead. As time goes on, red pimples and pus-filled bumps may appear. Some people also notice small blood vessels across their nose and cheeks. In some people the skin of the nose may become red and thick.

What causes rosacea and who gets it?

No one knows the exact cause of rosacea. There may be more than just one cause. Rosacea tends to run in fair-skinned families and tends to occur in people who blush easily. Symptoms usually begin in adults between the ages of 30 and 60, and women are most likely to get rosacea.

Can rosacea be cured?

No, but it can be treated. Treatment is aimed at controlling the symptoms, making your skin look better, and reducing the frequency of flare-ups. If not treated, rosacea may get worse over time.

What can I do to help my rosacea get better?

Avoiding things that make rosacea flare-up can help. Things to avoid may include sun exposure, hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, strenuous exercise, stress, and extreme hot and cold temperatures. If these things make your rosacea worse, you may want to avoid them as much as possible.

Certain products may help calm the blood vessels and reduce the redness. One product, Skin Medica Acne Toner, is effective for many people. Green tea is an effective anti-inflammatory and topically-applied caffeine acts as a vasoconstrictor. These 2 ingredients are combined in the Replenix Foaming Face Cleanser and the Replenix Green Tea Serum. Many patients have had success using these products in calming the redness from rosacea. Sunscreen, preferably containing zinc oxide, should be used each morning, year round to protect the skin.

Also, avoid facial treatments that include a lot of steam or menthol products.
