| Hello, Here is Your ESCC Healthy Skin News Update | ||
As we reach the “dog days” of summer and begin to get the kids ready to head back to school, many of us will be looking at our skin and realizing the effects the sun, pool, lake water, etc. had on our skin. We no longer have that healthy glow, but instead we are left with dull, dehydrated skin. What’s the best way to improve skin texture and smoothness? In a word...exfoliation. Skin exfoliation is a natural process associated with the constant regeneration of the cell of our epidermis. Skin cells generate in the deepest layer of the epidermis and move toward the surface. Old skin cells slough off and new skin cells replace the old. This natural process slows down as we age – teens renew their skin cells every 21-28 days, middle age adults every 28 to 40 days, and those over 50 can take up to 50 days to renew their cells. The best way to improve skin texture and smoothness is to speed up this cycle, accelerating the shedding of dead skin cells, thereby encouraging the replacement of new skin cells. There are 2 main ways to do this, and both are very beneficial to the skin.Mechanical exfoliation Mechanical exfoliation involves physically sloughing off dead skin cells. A great way to achieve this is through microdermabrasion. Microderm encourages the production of new skin cells, stimulates collagen growth under the skin, and removes debris from the pores helping to decrease pore size. During this painless process a wand with a tip of finely crushed diamonds mixed with stainless steel is passed over your skin. The wand is attached to suction, which helps keep the wand close to the skin and sucks the roughed up dead skin cells away. The result is a glowing, smooth complexion. There is no downtime after this procedure (your skin may appear a little pink for about an hour afterwards) and this procedure may be repeated every 4 weeks as desired.
Chemical exfoliation involves chemical agents that are applied topically. The most common procedure is a chemical peel. There is a wide variety of peels and chemical exfoliants available. The mildest of peels, such as glycolic acid peels, or Skin Medica’s Illuminizing Peel, provides more microscopic exfoliation – shedding dead skin cells without a lot of visible peeling. For a more aggressive approach, with more dramatic results, we recommend the Vitalize Peel or the new ViPeel. Visible peeling of the skin will occur for about 3 days following these two peels. Peels are also very effective at fading unwanted pigment from old acne, sun damage or melasma as well as the treatment of acne and may be repeated every 2 to 10 weeks depending on the type of peel and the condition of the skin. Effective Products Products also deserve a mention as an effective way to stimulate cell turnover. Glycolic face wash is an excellent product for removing the “glue” that keeps dead cells on our face and in our pores. A gentle scrub such as the Skin Polisher by SkinMedica is a great product to use between microderms or peels. Retinol, the number one anti-aging product, is essential to the skin cell turnover and renewal process. Any of these products are available at ESCC and we can personalize your routine to maximize your results. How can ESCC help me get a smooth clear complexion? It is important to remember that our skin needs constant maintenance to look its best.
