Hello, Here is Your ESCC Healthy Skin News Update

Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm Dermal Fillers…what are they and what do they do?

smiling woman

In recent months there has been a lot of press about “dermal fillers” specifically Restylane and Juvederm. Many people are confused about what dermal fillers are and what they do. Read on for answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about dermal fillers.

What is Restylane and Juvederm?

Restylane and Juvederm are brand names of substances commonly referred to by doctors as dermal fillers. Both of these products are safe and natural fillers made up of a non-animal based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the body.

What can fillers do?

Fillers are used to restore volume and fullness to the skin. They are best used to fill in lines around the nose (nasolabial folds), around the lips, and areas at the corners of the lips (marionette lines). Fillers are also used to restore fullness to the lips and areas in the face like cheeks and hollows under the eyes.

Are fillers safe?

Yes. Fillers have been used for more than 20 years worldwide. Since the hyaluronic acid is fully compatible with your bodily fluids there is virtually no risk of allergic reactions and no allergy testing is required.

What is the procedure like?

First you will consult with the doctor about the specific areas in which you would like volume restored. Once the area(s) have been determined, a topical numbing cream is applied to your skin for about 20-30 minutes prior to the procedure to minimize any discomfort from the injection. The product is then injected into the desired areas. Usually the entire procedure takes less than an hour and a half (including the numbing time.)

Are there any side effects?

This can vary by the individual. After the treatment you may have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than a week. You also may experience some bruising at the injection sight – which can typically be concealed with cover-up. We do have pre-procedure instructions that can help minimize swelling and bruising as well as a natural supplement called Arnica Montana for those who tend to bruise more easily. We always advise people to schedule procedures at least 2-3 weeks before a special event like a wedding, to ensure no visible signs of the procedure.

How long do the effects of fillers last?

face

Fillers can last 6 to 12 months depending upon the individual. The exception to this is when used around the lips. Because we use our lips more often through eating, talking, etc. the product is more quickly metabolized by the body and may last closer to 6 months. Recently Restylane has been granted FDA approval for the duration of up to 18 months if a patient comes in for an enhancement between 6 and 9 months. We have found that patients who return within 6 to 9 months for a touch-up are able to sustain their results for well over a year.

What is the cost of the procedure?

The product is priced per syringe, and the cost of the procedure depends upon how many syringes needed to make your desired correction. The more volume you want restored, the more syringes needed. Please note that all syringes don’t always have to be done in one visit. Often a patient will have some filler injected at one visit and then return in a few weeks to have additional filler placed in areas where she/he wants more volume. This layering process does not detract from the final result and can help to make the procedure more manageable financially. Because it is difficult to accurately quote a cost without seeing the patient first, we suggest scheduling a complimentary consultation to accurately determine a treatment plan for you.

I am considering the procedure. What should I do?
